What to Wear to Dance Class

Why Dance Quest has a dress code

Proper dance attire is part of training at Dance Quest International.

A consistent dress code helps dancers concentrate, creates a sense of inclusiveness, and allows instructors to clearly see alignment, posture, placement, and technique. We understand that a new dancer may begin class with different attire or shoes and work toward the full requirements as appropriate dancewear is purchased.

Approved dancewear is available for viewing and sizing at the studio, and families may also shop Dance Quest classwear through DQIStore.com.

Hair, jewelry, and shoes

These rules apply across Dance Quest classes:

• Hair should be neat, secured, and pulled away from the face and neck.

• Ballet dancers must wear a proper bun.

• Jewelry should not be worn in class or rehearsal, with the exception of small/stud earrings.

• Dancers should wear the correct shoes for their class.

• Dance shoes should never be worn outside.

Wearing dance shoes outdoors can damage the shoes and bring dirt or debris onto the dance floors.

Ballet leotard colors by level

Dance Quest uses level-specific ballet leotard colors:

A solid black leotard is acceptable for dancers who are not taking ballet or on non-ballet class days when permitted by the class dress requirements.

PreBallet classes

Girls:

• Soft pink cami or tank leotard, with or without an attached skirt

• Pink footed or convertible/transition tights

• No footless tights

• Pink split-sole canvas or leather ballet slippers

Boys:

• Black joggers or shorts

• White T-shirt

• Black split-sole canvas or leather ballet slippers

Combo classes

Girls:

• Soft pink cami or tank leotard, with or without attached skirt

• Pink or tan footed or convertible/transition tights

• No footless tights

• Pink split-sole ballet slippers

• Tan Mary Jane-style tap shoes

• Tan slip-on jazz shoes/booties when required

Boys:

• Black joggers or shorts

• White T-shirt

• Black split-sole ballet slippers

Ballet — all levels

• Solid tank or cami leotard in the dancer's assigned level color

• Optional black dance skirt

• Black dance shrug

• Pink footed or convertible/transition tights

• No footless tights

• Split-sole pink canvas ballet shoes

• No dance shorts or athletic shorts for ballet class

Jazz, Musical Theatre & Dance Technique

• Solid leotard in black or the dancer's ballet level color

• Tan convertible/transition tights

• Leggings, dance pants, or dance shorts worn with tights

• Tan slip-on jazz shoes/booties

• Character shoes may be required for Musical Theatre

Tap

• Solid black or ballet-level-color tank/cami leotard

• T-shirts are acceptable

• Tan convertible/transition tights

• Leggings, dance pants, or shorts worn with tights

• Black tap Oxford shoes

Contemporary

• Solid black or ballet-level-color tank/cami leotard

• Leggings, dance pants, or shorts worn with tights

• Skin-tone stirrup tights

• Bodywrapper Twyla canvas shoes in a skin-tone color

Acro

• Solid black or ballet-level-color tank/cami leotard

• Leggings, dance pants, or shorts worn with tights

• Skin-tone stirrup tights or no tights, depending on class requirements

Hip Hop

• Solid black or ballet-level-color leotard, T-shirt, or tank

• No midriff showing

• Leggings, dance pants, or shorts worn with tights

• Sneakers reserved specifically for studio use and not worn outdoors

• A specific shoe brand or style may be required for performances

General tights rule

A simple way to remember Dance Quest's tights guidance:

If you are wearing shoes, tights should coordinate with the shoes. If you are dancing without shoes, tights should coordinate with your skin tone.

Always follow the class-specific requirements above when they are more specific.

What not to wear

The Dance Quest policy packet specifically lists these dress-code "don'ts":

• Satin ballet slippers

• Crop tops or sports bras as class tops

• Shorts without tights

• Loose hair

• Unattached fluffy tutus
